Navigating a Changing Climate in Arctic and Sub-Arctic Regions
PIANC – ‘The World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure’, aims to develop a guidance document for adaptation to climate change for waterborne transport infrastructure, through means of a working group (WG178).
As part of developing this document, and in order to assure that the final guidance document covers most of the available adaptation information, the working group seeks input from relevant stakeholders in the form of case studies and workshops.
The workshops aim to gather a broad group of stakeholders relevant to waterborne transport infrastructure, in order to share climate change adaptation experience and knowledge from all perspectives. This will provide an excellent opportunity to hear how other organisations are addressing this important subject and provide you with the opportunity to share your experiences too.
The workshops will specifically focus on:
Regionally and/or locally specific climate change projections; where to obtain and how to interpret the available data
Risk assessment; data collection and management
Adaptation options for waterborne transport infrastructure; what has been tried and what other options are available, both structural and non-structural
Decision making for waterborne transport infrastructure; understanding how and when to adopt adaptation measures
The guidance document; what information should be included
The workshops are divided into regions with similar recorded/expected impacts from climate change. The workshop: Navigating a Changing Climate in Arctic and Sub-Arctic Regions will focus on adaptation to climate change that is specific for the arctic and sub-arctic regions, such as (but not exclusively):
Increased icing of maritime infrastructure due to increased storminess
Increased wave attack due to lack of sea ice
Increased erosion of beaches and river-banks
Melting of permafrost causing increased erosion and destabilisation of infrastructure
Increased risk of flooding and avalanches due to changes in precipitation patterns
Changes in arctic navigation due to changes in sea ice cover and mobility
The workshop will take place in Lappeenranta, Finland from the 23rd – 24th of September, 2015 in conjunction with the NordPIANC conference.
Attendees and speakers will be responsible for their own expenses. Registration is required but there is no registration fee. To register, please send an email with detailed contact information to Onno Musch. The workshop is limited to 30 people and registration received after August 10th is not guaranteed. For those who have practical adaptation experience please use the following link to fill out the case study template (case studies from parties not able to attend the workshop are also very welcome!):
